The Atlas Mountains offer one of Morocco's greatest contrasts to the cities and the desert. They can be a day trip from Marrakech, a multi-night stay, or part of a crossing to the south.
Three ways to experience the Atlas
- A day or half-day in a valley near Marrakech, with a short walk and a village lunch.
- A night or two in a mountain lodge, for walks and slower time.
- A scenic crossing over a high pass, such as the Tizi n'Tichka, on the way to Ouarzazate and the desert.
Roads and timing
Mountain roads are winding, and journey times can be considerably longer than the distance suggests. Build in time for stops, and avoid planning tight connections after a mountain crossing.
Weather
Conditions change quickly with altitude. Snow is possible in winter and spring at higher elevations, and summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms. Dress in layers.
Walking and trekking
Short valley walks need only reasonable fitness. Longer or higher routes, including ascents of peaks like Toubkal, should be done with qualified local guides and appropriate equipment.
Combining with other regions
The Atlas fits naturally between Marrakech and the Sahara, or as a restful complement to a city-focused trip.
