Travelling one way from Fez to Marrakech means you never retrace your steps, and the desert sits comfortably in the middle. This is the shape of our four-day Desert Adventure from Fez, which works well as a starting point to extend.
Day one: Fez to Merzouga
The day begins in the Middle Atlas, passing Ifrane, often called the Little Switzerland of Morocco, and the cedar forests of Azrou, home to Barbary macaques. Lunch is in Midelt, and the road then descends towards the Sahara.
Day two: Merzouga and a camel trek
After breakfast the day covers local Berber villages and the market at Rissani, followed by an afternoon camel trek across the dunes of Erg Chebbi to a desert camp for the night.
Day three: sunrise, then the gorges
Sunrise over the dunes comes first, then a return to Merzouga. The route continues through the Todra Gorge, where tall cliffs form a canyon, to the Dades Valley and its kasbahs, ending the day near Ouarzazate.
Day four: Aït Benhaddou and the High Atlas
The final day visits Aït Benhaddou, then crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and arrives in Marrakech.
Making it less rushed
- Add a night in Fez before you start, so the first day is not also your arrival day.
- Add a night near the Todra Gorge or the Dades Valley to break up the third day.
- Longer versions of this route exist in our catalogue.
The route is a template. We adjust its length, stops and pace around your dates before anything is proposed.
This guide is general planning information. Conditions, opening hours and entry rules change, so we confirm current details when planning your journey.
