How to Plan a Private Morocco Trip

A practical guide to deciding where to go, how long to stay and what to settle before you contact anyone.

Morocco rewards planning, mostly because it is bigger and more varied than it looks on a map. Distances are long, roads in the mountains are slow, and the climate differs sharply between the coast, the cities, the mountains and the desert. A little preparation makes the difference between a trip that feels rushed and one that feels effortless.

Start with how you want to feel, not what you want to see

Before choosing places, think about pace. Do you want a base for several nights, or a route with a new place every couple of days? Do you prefer city energy, quiet landscapes or a mix? Your answer shapes everything else.

Decide your season and rough dates

Dates are the most constraining factor. Summer is very hot inland and in the desert, while winter can be cold in the mountains and at night in the Sahara. Spring and autumn are often the most comfortable for combining regions. See our guide to when to visit Morocco for more detail.

Be honest about travel time

A common mistake is trying to fit too much in. Moving between Marrakech and the Sahara dunes, for instance, takes a long day. A good itinerary includes fewer one-night stops and at least a couple of days where nothing is scheduled.

Things worth deciding before you enquire

  • Approximate dates, or a flexible window.
  • Who is travelling, including children or anyone with mobility needs.
  • The experiences you care most about, such as food, desert, mountains, architecture or craft.
  • How you feel about long drives and moving hotels.
  • Any dietary requirements.
  • A rough comfort level and budget range, if you have one.

What a private trip changes

With a private itinerary you set the pace: start later, stay longer in a place you love, or drop a stop. It also lets guides and drivers adapt to your interests rather than a group's lowest common denominator. Start by sharing what inspires you, and the route can follow.
