Discovering Morocco's Imperial Cities

Fez, Meknes, Rabat and Marrakech: what sets each apart, and how to decide how long to spend in each.

· Tailored Luxury Tours

Morocco's four imperial cities, Fez, Meknes, Rabat and Marrakech, each served as a capital under different dynasties. They are often visited together, but they feel very different from one another.

Fez: the medieval heart

Fez is the most intricate and, for many, the most rewarding. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Plan to spend more time here than you think you need.

Meknes: calmer and grander

Meknes has monumental gates and a quieter pace than its neighbours. It is also a convenient base for visiting the Roman ruins of Volubilis.

Rabat: the modern capital

Rabat combines a historic kasbah with a relaxed, leafy, administrative feel. It makes a calm pause between the more intense medinas.

Marrakech: the red city

Marrakech is lively and photogenic, with palaces, gardens and a famous main square. It is also the gateway to the High Atlas.

How long in each?

That depends on your interests. Fez rewards the most time for craft and architecture. Meknes and Rabat can be shorter stops, and Marrakech works as either a start or an end point. A tailored itinerary lets you give time where it matters to you.
